The Dutch Have The Right Idea About Sex, Even in Prison
Less shame, more conversations
Recently, Demeter got an email from a counselor connected to a juvenile justice program in the Netherlands. They’re working on a project, putting together a pamphlet for youthful offenders coming into the program, and for those currently in residence. They found our article concerning romantic relationships while incarcerated and wanted to use it. Demeter and I agreed, the Dutch have the right idea when it comes to sex, sex education, and even how they handle their incarceration system — so of course we agreed.
The project is called “Educatie op Kamer” (Education in the room) and it is about offering more educational materials that youngsters can use and borrow when they are in their room in the evenings. And it’s not just about sex and relationships.
Multiple topics are available: sports and body, art and design, music and beats, business and work, and relationships and sex. A topic consists of a box filled with materials that they can borrow and take to their room. The sports box contains for example a foam roller, a scale, a booklet with exercises, a yoga mat, weights, and more.
The relationships and sex box contains a magazine that all young adults will receive (they don’t have to borrow the box) and specific subject…
