The Perfect Excuse For Prisons to Enforce Lockdowns is Whatever They Choose

Today, it’s COVID causing staffing shortages, tomorrow, who knows.

By the time this is published, the camp where I’m housed will be under lockdown for the 264th hour or 9th day. Out of those 264 hours, we have been allowed out of our cells for approximately 3.5 hours. Total.

Our camp has single cell units, which are 6 x 12. I’m lucky, I’m not double bunked. We’re not supposed to be, but in other blocks, some inmates still are because they’ve yet to be moved either to another camp or another block with openings.

So, why are we in lockdown?

I’ve previously written about how guards or COs are not required to be vaccinated nor are they wearing masks within the prison. Not every inmate is vaccinated either, but they are required to get vaccinated before getting a job within the prison.

The difference is, inmates aren’t in contact with anyone in the outside world right now, other than guards.

We were first placed in a modified lockdown because of inclement weather. Staff couldn’t reach the prison due to treacherous roads, so we were being locked down earlier at night than usual and let out later in the morning. Which I understand…
